Getting Ready? STRS-HTML

Retirement planning and the eventual step of moving into retirement from the workforce can be an exciting and life altering phase of our lives. SWOEA is sensitive to this experience of our members and makes the following resources and links available.

State Teachers Retirement System
Individual Counseling
Members can obtain accurate retirement information and current personal benefit projections through an individual conference with an STRS Ohio counselor. Members should schedule a counseling session within three years of retirement and again within six to 12 months of retirement.

Members should also schedule a counseling session when they need information about disability benefits and purchasing service already certified with STRS Ohio.

One-on-one conferences with a counselor may be scheduled at STRS Ohio in Columbus from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the academic year and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, during July and August. To make an appointment, call toll free at 1-888-227-7877. Members receive confirmation letters and maps to STRS Ohio after they have scheduled an appointment.

For more information visit the official website STRS Ohio.

Public Employees Retirement System
In 1935, the Public Employees Retirement System of Ohio began a tradition of providing excellent retirement benefits for state employees. Today the System provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefit programs for public employees throughout the state who are not covered by another state or local retirement system. PERS serves more than 500,000 members and over 119,000 retirees and surviving beneficiaries who receive monthly benefits. The System currently services more than 3,700 public employers and has assets exceeding $50 billion.

For more information visit the official website PERS.

School Employees Retirement System
Established in 1937, the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio is the $8.5 billion state pension fund that provides pensions and benefits to Ohio's 172,000 active and retired non teaching public school employees.  Members include bus drivers, cafeteria workers, custodians, teacher’s aides, secretaries, administrative support staff, business managers, treasurers, and school board members.

For more information visit the official website SERS.

OEA has a wonderful resource page on their website that covers everything from new legislation that affects retirement to frequently asked questions about retirement. Go to OEA Retirement for more information.
